How To Act Like A Leader: Tips From The Experts.

From the day we’re born we never stop learning. From learning to read and write, to learning skills for our professional life, we’re constantly developing.

But as we make our way up the career ladder, there’s one crucial skill that, for one reason or another, is very rarely taught. No we’re not talking about how to make the perfect brew, we’re talking about leadership.

Whether you’re studying at university or have been given a promotion at work, we’re here to help you out.

First things first, if you want people to do or be something you have to do it yourself first. Whether that’s always arriving on time or going the extra mile, make sure you’re leading by example and doing your fare share.

Often when people think ‘Leader’ they think of somebody taking centre stage delivering a motivating speech. Yes that’s part of it, but to be able to offer wisdom and advice, you must first know what people need to be advised on. Stop thinking about what you need to say, and start thinking about who you need to listen to.

As a leader you should be someone that people look up to, respect, trust and believe. The only way to achieve this is to be genuine to yourself. If you don’t believe in what you are saying, no-one else will.

Just because you’re a leader, it doesn’t mean you don’t make mistakes. It’s not the mistakes that matter, it’s how you learn from them. Whether it’s a mistake you’ve made personally, or that of somebody in your team, think about what happened, learn from it and move on. And remember, it’s all about transparency, don’t be afraid to let your team know about the mistakes you’ve made.

Put faith in your team and allow them to deliver. Hand holding and micro managing will not only take up far too much of your time but it’s demotivating for your team. Communicate your vision well and they will excel.

Last of all, be confident in your decisions – after all, you’re there to lead. If you’re doing all of the above, chance are your decisions will be the right ones.
