5 Ways To Boost Your Energy In 5 Minutes

Sometimes, no matter how much sleep you’ve had, you wake up feeling drained. You don’t have the energy to swing your feet out of bed; never mind get the bus all the way to work, or wrestle the kids into their school uniforms.

So why do you wake up feeling groggy, despite getting a full eight hours of rest? In most cases this is due to the neurotransmitters in your brain. In the morning, when most of us are in the REM stage of sleep, your brain is busy dreaming. During this time, your brain consumes large quantities of the molecule ATP, which contains Adenosine. Adenosine is associated with increased levels of drowsiness, which causes you to wake up feeling lethargic - no matter how well you slept.

Caffeine can help to block this sleep-inducing chemical, but if you’re trying to cut back on coffee, or simply need a little extra help some mornings, here are our quick energy boosting tips to get you out of the door in no time.

1. Drink a glass of water

Sometimes the best solutions are the cheapest! Low energy can often be a symptom of dehydration – and after 8 hours asleep, we’re usually pretty thirsty by morning. The shock of a cold glass of water in the morning gets your body moving, kick starts your digestive system and can actually boost your alertness.

2. Open your curtains, or get a SAD lamp

Light regulates our circadian rhythms. Sunlight, or the light emitted from a SAD lamp, is an external cue to our internal body clock that it’s time to wake up and will make jumping out of bed in the morning a whole lot easier.

3. Sing a song

According to music psychologists, a positive song with a strong beat can help increase alertness in the morning. Singing along is said to reduce your levels of stress hormones and results in an emotional high – the best way to start your day!

4. Eat your breakfast (and don’t forget the nuts!)

Spend five minutes throwing together a nutritious breakfast, such as a piece of wholemeal toast with a thick spread of peanut butter. Peanuts are high in the nutrients essential to energy production, so don’t scrimp on the topping!

5. Treat your skin

Invest in an invigorating face wash. Pick one with an energising fragrance, such as zingy citrus or refreshing peppermint, and treat your skin to a facial every morning.
